Heritage Malta has installed electronic data logging equipment at Tarxien temples, funded by the Bank of Valletta as part of the BOV Tarxien Temples Project.
The sophisticated equipment will enable Heritage Malta to collect scientific data guiding the agency on how best to conserve the temples. The equipment will record a number of environmental factors including wind speed and direction, solar radiation, humidity and temperature.
These factors have a telling effect on the preservation of the site. An analysis of data will be crucial in understanding the monuments' deterioration.
The next step in the preservation of the site will include the detailed documentation of two megaliths bearing graffiti of ships, possibly the earliest representations of seafaring in the world. This documentation is being carried out as a preliminary step before actual conservation measures are taken for the preservation of these megaliths.
