Extensive emergency works at Gzira primary school have been completed in record time, Education Minister Louis Galea said during a tour of the school yesterday.

He said the works, handled by the Foundation for Tomorrow's Schools, included the replacement of the top floor roof, which had been in a dangerous state. The work was taken in hand as soon as pupils left for their holidays.

He said that other work done over the past few weeks at the school involved new power and water systems, a new computer network and whitewashing.

Works to be handled during the school year will include replacement of fencing, improvements to the recreation areas and measures to make the school more accessible.

Supports have been placed beneath the ceiling of the first floor to ensure its safety until its replacement next summer.

The minister said the foundation was also building new classes at Gzira secondary school. A call for tenders for the replacement of the roof of the hall at Lily of the Valley school in Mosta will be issued shortly.

Lifts are being installed in seven schools.
