Kiosk worker accused of misappropriating thousands of euro

Woman is alleged to have not inputted all sales made at kiosk

A 46-year-old woman has pleaded not guilty to misappropriating thousands of euro from her employer.

Silvana Azzopardi appeared in court on Wednesday afternoon where she was accused of misappropriation, making fraudulent gain and recidivism.

Police inspector Warren Galea explained that the Qawra Police Station received a criminal complaint from a kiosk owner about one of his employees – Silvana Azzopardi – who worked there for a number of years.

The owner reported that Azzopardi was misappropriating money from the company by not inputting all the sales and there were other discrepancies. The employer handed CCTV footage to the police where the officers could see the way in which she was taking the money. The woman was arrested on Wednesday morning.

Lawyer Nicholas Mifsud requested bail, which was granted against a €200 deposit and a €10,000 personal guarantee. The woman was ordered to sign the bail book twice a week and a curfew was imposed.

Magistrate Donatella Frendo Dimech presided. Police inspector Warren Galea prosecuted. Lawyer Nicholas Mifsud appeared for the accused while lawyer Marie Claire Ellul appeared for the alleged victim.
