An employer was yesterday charged with involuntarily causing serious injury to one of his employees when he failed to abide by health and safety regulations.

Joseph Cassar, 45, of Qormi pleaded not guilty to injuring employee Sango Youssof through negligence in Vittoriosa on August 20, 2003.

Mr Cassar was also charged with failing to ensure that machinery was well maintained and with not providing employees with protective gear.

Police Inspector Alfred Mallia prosecuted with the assistance of David Saliba, head of technical operations at the Occupational Health and Safety Authority.
