Enemalta Corporation is still the importer of liquid petroleum gas in Malta, and is the beneficiary of the government's social subsidy with a view to keeping the final selling price affordable. At the same time it is marking up the supplies it passes over to distributor Liquigas.
Answering a number of supplementary parliamentary questions from various members of the opposition, Minister Austin Gatt would not give details on subsidies or mark-ups, saying there was effectively another importer and distributor on the market. In view of this, he could not agree that Enemalta or Liquigas were monopolies.
When and if Liquigas assumed the responsibility for importing LPG, the government would have to review the subsidy system, he added. When asked by Opposition Leader Joseph Muscat if he thought LPG was now still affordable, Dr Gatt said the government was helping towards this end by subsidising Enemalta.
The mark-up to Liquigas was effectively a percentage authorised by the Malta Resources Authority.
