Lands Department employees moved in this morning to remove illegal extensions made to the former British services married quarters at San Nikola, near the bastions outside Cospicua.
The area is one of the most run-down in Malta, and plans are in hand for its rehabilitation, while preserving the historic buildings.
The inspectors, assisted by a contractor and the police, started removing illegal extensions to the residences - mostly boundary walls for 'new' back yards as well as kennels and rooms where animals are kept - Goats even graze in the area.
A Lands Department spokesman said the rehabilitation project will also include the Verdala area.
The residents were warned during the summer that all illegal extensions to the former barracks would be removed.
