Heart-throb Enrique Iglesias, one of the best-selling Latin recording artists in the world, is to give a concert in Malta at the beginning of summer, Tourism Minister Michael Refalo said yesterday.

The singer, author of hit singles like `Bailamos` and `Hero`, is to be lured to Malta thanks to a local promotion company, Dr Refalo said. Government would only be assisting in enticing tourists to the concert.

When contacted, the promoter said Enrique would be coming to Malta at the end of a world tour.

The promoter however refused to give further details, saying these would be given during a press conference in the coming days.

It is the second piece of good news for music lovers, after it was announced last week that dance masters Faithless are to give a concert in Malta on June 7.

The son of Julio Iglesias, Enrique is now considered to be a musical icon, selling millions of copies of his albums and showered with awards the world over.

His debut self-titled album sold more than a million copies within three months, and to date has sold more than six million worldwide.

The second album, `Vivir` (1997), has enjoyed global sales of more than five million discs and launched his first world tour backed by Elton John, Bruce Springsteen and Billy Joel.

In just three years, Enrique had sold more than 17 million Spanish-language albums, more than anyone else during that period.

He also won the 1996 Grammy for Best Latin Performer, 1996`s Billboard Artist of the Year, Billboard`s Album of the Year for `Vivir`, two American Music Awards, a World Music Award, in addition to countless accolades around the world.

Then came `Enrique`, Enrique`s first album in English, bringing his global album sales to a total of more than 23 million.

Enrique achieved gold or platinum status in 32 countries. Last year he released the follow-up, `Escape`, once again topping music charts across the globe.

Music buffs around the world now agree that Enrique is no longer living in the shadow of his father.
