Widespread mounds of rubble and domestic waste are ruining Wied Qirda in Zebbug, as well as the entire Wied il-Kbir valley system, of which the former is a tributary, Nature Trust (Malta) said yesterday.

The environment group warned that farmland lying outside the development zone in Wied Moqbol, in Zurrieq has been earmarked by a developer for the relocation of two hardstone quarries from Hagar Qim.

"If the relocation is granted, besides the loss of even more farmland outside the development zone, 50 carob trees will have to be cut down. The land in question can only be developed for social purposes as stipulated by the Church-state treaty. Hence, NT urges the Malta Environment and Planning Authority to refute the permit for such a relocation," it said.
