The Erasmus Action within the Socrates Programme makes provisions for the mobility of teaching staff. This activity facilitates the exchange of academics between universities and other higher education institutions participating in the Socrates and Erasmus programmes.

Over the past two years, since the submission of the first Socrates Institutional Contract by the University of Malta, various members of the academic staff have participated in teaching mobility periods, visiting and lecturing in European universities with whom the University of Malta holds a bilateral agreement (e.g. the University of Exeter, the University of Vienna, the Università degli Studi di Perugia, and the Free University in Berlin).

The Socrates Office is currently drawing up a detailed list of the placements that are available for the upcoming academic year in the various areas of study. A total of 62 placements in 14 general areas of university teaching and research are available.

These placements result from the bilateral agreements that have been concluded for the academic year 2002 and 2003. Placements are usually of one week's duration and can be undertaken up to June 2003.

Practical arrangements for the organisation of this mobility involve the respective academic departments and the Socrates Co-ordinators at the home and hosting universities. Financial assistance in the form of an Erasmus teaching grant, providing partial cover for travel, accommodation and other expenses is made available to each participant.

All University staff members interested in participating can obtain further information from the Socrates Website: http://home.um.edu.mt/socrates/ erasmus.html or by contacting the Socrates Office on 3290-2204, e-mail stefania.fabri@um.edu.mt.
