The English-Speaking Union branch was inaugurated at the Gozo Ministry last Sunday.
Lord Alan Watson of Richmond, emeritus chairman of the English-Speaking Union International Council, and Gozo Minister Giovanna Debono witnessed the signature of the memorandum of understanding between ESU Malta and Gozo.
The launch ceremony took place two days after the inauguration of ESU Malta.
Both events were attended by over 50 delegates from 12 countries, including Arne Zettersten, president of the ESU International Council, and by British High Commissioner Louise Stanton.
No fewer than seven ESU branches from England and Scotland were represented, apart from members from Brazil, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, India, Latvia, New Zealand, Romania, Tajikistan and the US.
The ceremony was followed by the reading of the winning essays of a competition for students in three categories: upper primary school and Form I; Forms II and III; and Forms V and VI. Students, led by their teacher Sylvana Sultana then gave a public speaking presentation of the ECO-Gozo concept.
In the afternoon, the foreign delegates were regaled with a choral concert at Xagħra basilica by the Schola Cantorum Jubilate and a tour of Ġgantija.
