The Gharb local council will be receiving €145,000 in structural funds from the European Union for the restoration of Wied il-Mielah valley and the management of a storm water project.

The council said it will be the first council to receive funding from the EU's structural funds.

The funding represents 73 per cent of the value of the project. The remaining 27 per cent will be financed by the council itself.

The works will consist of the excavation and cleaning of the valley basin, construction of rubble walls and embellishment of part of the valley with rustic furniture.

The project will be spread over an 18-month period and the works must be completed throughout this year, the council said.

Through the allocated funds, the council will be in a position to carry out only one phase of the whole project for Wied il-Mielah. Its plan is to transform the valley into a unique attraction for foreign and Maltese tourists.
