The unemployment rate in the 15 member states of the European Union stood at 7.6 per cent in April compared to 7.5 per cent in March, Eurostat said.

The unemployment rate in the EU during April 2001 was 7.4 per cent.

In April 2002, the lowest rate of unemployment (2.2 per cent) was registered in Luxembourg and the highest, 11.3 per cent, in Spain.

The Malta-EU Information Centre said Employment and Training Corporation statistics showed that in April 2002 the number of registered unemployed in Malta stood at 7,637.

The fourth Labour Force Survey (LFS) carried out between November 26 and December 2, 2001 by the National Statistics Office, put the unemployment rate in December 2001 at 6.5 per cent. The majority, or 53.7 per cent of unemployed persons, were aged between 15 and 24 years.

The definitions and criteria used in the LFS match international methodologies used by the ILO, which are very different from those used by the ETC.
