High-powered delegations from European Union and Arab League states began arriving yesterday for the first-ever dialogue meeting between the two blocs, which will be held in Malta between today and tomorrow.
The foreign ministers' meeting will also be attended by EU Secretary General and High Representative Javier Solana, Arab League Secretary General Amre Moussa and EU Commissioner for External Relations Benita Ferrero Waldner.
The meeting will discuss the situation in the Middle East, areas of cooperation including climate change and development, and inter-cultural dialogue in a one-and-a-half day exchange of views which includes two working sessions in minister-only format.
The initiative was launched by Foreign Minister Michael Frendo in September 2006 and was followed up by a senior officials meeting last December.
