EU constitution

It was heartening to read in The Times (June 12) of a petition being circulated by a private citizen calling for the inclusion of references to God and Christianity in the European Union constitution.

My friends and I have been saddened by the omission of such references and by the lack of interest, so far at least, in local quarters that, we feel, should have been interested and should have protested.

In that reputable publication The Tablet, of February 15, under the heading "No place for God in EU constitution", we read: "The Vatican and the Bishops of the European Union have reacted with dismay to the first draft of a future Constitution for Europe which excluded God and Religion". While in Malta all we have been hearing so far are words to the effect of "It doesn't matter, don't worry!".

My friends and I, while congratulting the private citizen (a lady) who is circulating the petition, hope that the petition will receive the widest support. For this to happen, of course, it will have to be brought to the attention of as many people as possible - including those who lead a secluded life, never, or hardly ever, read newspapers, listen to the radio, or watch television, and yet voted "Yes" (for Europe) blindly, in the last referendum and general election, not even knowing anything about the Convention and what it was doing, or not doing!
