Tourism and Culture Minister Francis Zammit Dimech told European culture ministers that Maltese art, architecture and especially language were living evidence of how European and Semitic dimensions co-existed in Maltese culture, which now formed part of the enlarged European Union tapestry.
Speaking at a meeting of the ministers in Berlin, Dr Zammit Dimech said the EU was becoming a society based on knowledge and education and this would create greater scope for cultural activity across the Union.
He said the strength of the EU lay in its cultural wealth, which was directly related to the diversity of the different cultures it promoted.
He added that Malta would be working to make use of its cultural heritage to attract tourists.
After the meeting, Maltese soprano Miriam Gauci sang arias in front of more than 1,000 people in a concert by artists from the 10 new members states.
The concert was organised by the German culture minister in the Berlin Konzerthaus.
