The eurozone government deficit and that of the EU25 last year improved compared to 2003 while the debt increased, Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Communities said yesterday.

In the eurozone, the government deficit dropped from 2.8 per cent of GDP in 2003 to 2.7 per cent in 2004 and in the EU25 it fell from 2.9 to 2.6 per cent.

In the eurozone the government debt to GDP ratio rose from 70.8 per cent in 2003 to 71.3 per cent in 2004 and in the EU25 from 63.3 per cent to 63.8 per cent.
