About €700,000 in EU funds have been obtained to build Gozo's first Crafts Development Centre, within the Wistin Camilleri Gozo Centre for Art and Crafts in Ghajnsielem.
Gozo Minister Giovanna Debono announced that the project includes construction of several units that will be utilised by craftsmen who would like to set up a crafts-related shop.
The Crafts Development Centre will also include several workshops, a multi-purpose hall and administrative space for the expansion of the Wistin Camilleri Centre for Art and Crafts.
Ms Debono said the project was intended to enhance the crafts sector in Gozo, providing more job opportunities on the island.
The project was submitted by the Ministry for Gozo for co-financing under the Gozo Priority.
As part of the project, a study will be held to identify the needs to set up a structure that will certify the product made in Gozo.
This project is being carried out under the Structural Funds for Malta for 2004-2006, co-financed under the European Regional Development Fund. An economic and financial feasibility study has been carried out while a tender for works needed will be issued in the coming weeks.
The Wistin Camilleri Gozo Centre for Art and Crafts was set up in December 1989 as the Wistin Camilleri School for Fine Arts. Today, 24 different courses are being offered to over 1,000 students ranging from primary ages to 60 plus.
