Between 2005 and 2007, three EU member states accepted a total of 84 refugees or asylum seekers who had landed in Malta.

Answering a parliamentary question by Jean Pierre Farrugia (PN), Foreign Affairs Minister Tonio Borg said the countries were The Netherlands (20 refugees and 16 persons with temporary humanitarian protection) in 2005; Germany (nine refugees and 11 protected persons) in 2006; and Lithuania (six asylum seekers), Ireland (ten refugees) and Portugal (12 persons with temporary humanitarian protection) in 2007.

Talks are currently in progress with France on the possibilities of taking a number of refugees or persons with temporary humanitarian protection.
