The government was investing heavily in the fisheries sector and was focusing its efforts on a Lm2 million project to have dry-standing facilities in Marsaxlokk, Rural Affairs Minister George Pullicino said.

This project, which would allow boats to be brought ashore for any repair works, is being funded mainly by the EU, with the government forking out just a quarter of the cost.

Other projects included the opening of a centre for the washing of crates, situated in the warehouses close to the Fish Market at Xatt il-Barriera, Valletta, the minister said.

Speaking during the centre's inauguration, he said there had been a Lm250,000 investment which consisted of the centre's restoration, the purchase of washing equipment and plastic crates and the installation of a hoist.
