Eurostat reported that in October 2003, the rate of unemployment in the 15 member states of the European Union stood at eight per cent, unchanged compared to September 2003.
The eight per cent represents 14.3 million unemployed men and women. A year earlier the rate of unemployment was 7.8 per cent.
Eurostat is the statistical office of the European Communities based in Luxembourg.
The lowest rate of unemployment, 3.9 per cent, was that registered in Luxembourg, while the highest, 11.2 per cent, was that in Spain.
The Labour Force Survey carried out between June 23-29 - the latest such figures available - by the National Statistics Office in Malta shows that the number of unemployed here during June 2003 was 12,045 or 7.5 per cent.
