The unemployment rate in the 15 EU member states in September stood at eight per cent, which remained unchanged when compared to August 2003, Eurostat said.

The percentage represents the 14.3 million unemployed.

A year earlier the rate of unemployment was 7.8 per cent.

Eurostat is the statistical office of the European Communities based in Luxembourg.
