Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi last Sunday laid the foundation stone of another ambitious project for Gozo - the redevelopment of Ninu Cremona Lyceum Complex in Victoria into a state-of-the art secondary school for boys.
The project is being carried out by the Foundation for Tomorrow's Schools under the Ministry of Education, Youth and Employment in collaboration with the Gozo Ministry.
The first phase of the project started some months ago. Demolition work is currently being carried out on one of the minor school playgrounds, making way for the first block that will house the school administration until the other three blocks are built. The project will cost around €7 million (Lm3.05 million) and take three years to complete.
The school will have 45 classrooms, nine science laboratories, six technology workshops, four computer labs, art rooms, food technology labs, needlework room, graphical communications rooms, a chapel, resource rooms and other modern educational facilities, including career guidance rooms, a library and open spaces that can be used for school and community purposes.
The project also includes a seven-a-side football pitch, with a 200-metre athletics track, that will be mainly used by schoolchildren. It will also be open to the public after school hours.
An underground car park will also be constructed while a new road connecting Europe Street to Fortunato Mizzi Street will be built to facilitate school transport and create a safe bay area.
