During 2008 there was a total of €68,000 worth of abuses of social benefits, Social Policy Minister John Dalli said in reply to a parliamentary question by Chris Agius (PL).

There were also other cases that had been identified as potentially abusive by the Director of Social Services and were pending on the decision of the Division of Social Security.

The moneys abusively paid out are recovered by the division.

Minister Dalli pointed out that the amount he had quoted did not include the €2,523,500 last year saved by the stopping of wrongly-claimed social benefits.
