Key points on cheques

Cheques denominated in Lm may only be issued up to December 31, 2007. Cheques dated as from €-day onwards may only be denominated in euro. Cheques issued in Maltese liri dated after December 31, 2007, will be dishonoured.

Cheques issued in Lm dated before December 31, 2007, will be accepted for payment for the normal validity period of six months from the date of issue. Cheques in euro issued from Maltese lira-denominated accounts, dated before €-day, will be rejected by the banking system.

Chequebooks with the Lm printed sign can still be used for making payments in euro, by crossing out the Lm sign, inserting the euro symbol (€) and signing in full next to it.
