Malta's Euro-Med Movement has welcomed the treaty establishing a European Constitution, saying it was a historic landmark that aimed at providing a firmer foundation on which European citizens can build a Europe that is socially just, globally secure, environmentally sound and economically competitive.

Following lengthy discussions on the contents of the treaty, the movement said in a statement that it believes the treaty assigns citizens a stronger footing for re-shaping Europe in the 21st century.

The treaty, it said, will enable European citizens to fight more effectively for their hopes and concerns on democracy by simplifying the decision-making of the EU, giving the European Parliament a stronger say and increasing the role of national parliaments in scrutinising European decisions.

The treaty was good for the job market as it aimed to establish a social market economy, in search of targets seeking full employment and affirming the role of trade unions in a social partnership for Europe.

The movement said that by combating social exclusion and promoting social justice as fundamental objectives of the European Union, the treaty will also tackle the problem of poverty.

The treaty was also committed to the sustainable development of the planet.

By means of a solidarity clause among member states, a common security policy and the eradication of poverty in the world, the treaty would combat terrorism and its root causes.

By promoting women and prohibiting discrimination on the grounds of sex, race, colour, ethnic or social origin, genetic features, language, religion or belief, political or any other option, membership of a national minority, property, birth, disability, age or sexual orientation, the treaty promoted equality, the movement said.

Promoting international responsibility by pursuing cooperation and establishing stronger ties with Europe's neighbouring countries particularly in the Mediterranean, was another positive aspect of the treaty, it said.
