A high level delegation from the European Socialists is in Malta to discuss the MLP's request for full membership of the group.
The MLP submitted a formal application for full membership last June.
Currently, the party has only observer status.
The delegation, which yesterday had a meeting with MLP representatives led by party leader Alfred Sant at the party headquarters in Hamrun, includes the Dutch vice-president of the European Socialists, Jan Marinus Wiersma; the parliamentary group deputy leader, Gary Titley, in charge of EU enlargement issues, and German MEP Barbara Weiler, a member of the European Parliament's Joint Parliamentary Committee on Malta.
It will report to the PES presidency next month before a final decision is taken on the Labour Party's application for membership.
