Europe’s first solar flower project
The installation of solar flowers within the Multi-Modal Hub aligns perfectly with the Gozo Island of Villages Strategy and Gozo Vision 2050
At the heart of Ta’ Xħajma, Gozo, something remarkable has taken root, 15 solar flowers have just been installed at the Gozo Multi-Modal Hub, marking the first project of its kind in Europe. This milestone is not merely a feat of engineering or aesthetics; it is a statement of intent. It is a tangible demonstration of our government’s unwavering commitment to sustainable transport, renewable energy and a greener, smarter Gozo.
Inspired by nature itself, these innovative solar systems mimic the sunflower’s natural motion. Each ‘flower’ opens automatically at sunrise, follows the sun throughout the day and closes at sunset. This smart mechanism allows each unit to generate up to 40% more energy than traditional solar panels, ensuring optimal efficiency and maximum output.
For us, this project represents far more than technological progress, it reflects our vision for Gozo’s future. The installation of solar flowers within the Multi-Modal Hub aligns perfectly with the Gozo Island of Villages Strategy and our Gozo Vision 2050, which together aim to shape a more sustainable, environmentally conscious island.
This initiative offers clean, renewable energy that directly supports the Park and Ride facility operating from the hub, powering the electric buses that connect the Mġarr Harbour to Ta’ Xħajma. It also supplies lighting and energy for the site.
Through such projects, we are not only creating efficient transport systems but also integrating renewable energy into daily life, turning Gozo into a model for sustainable living.
The introduction of these first-ever solar flowers in Europe sends a strong message: Gozo can lead by example. We are proving that modern technology, when applied intelligently, can reduce emissions, lower operating costs and improve quality of life. More importantly, it shows that innovation and environmental protection can go hand in hand to build a more resilient economy.
This first-ever project in Europe is not just about optimism or confirmation that we are on the right track when it comes to renewable and sustainable energy but defines Malta and specifically Gozo as a blueprint for other countries not just in Europe but around the globe. The strong collaboration across departments and a shared vision for Malta and Gozo have made this possible. Through the Vision 2050 Strategy, we are ensuring that projects like this not only serve today’s needs but also lay the groundwork for a more sustainable tomorrow.
A demonstration of our commitment to a greener, smarter Gozo- Clint Camilleri
The clean energy produced by these 15 solar flowers will directly offset the electricity used to charge the electric bus fleet operating from the Park and Ride service. This circular, self-sufficient system exemplifies our national approach to decarbonising transport while contributing to Malta’s climate and energy targets.
Funded through the RRP C1-I5 Renewable Energy Investments in Roads and Public Spaces, part of the EU’s NextGenerationEU Recovery and Resilience Plan, this €850,000 investment demonstrates what can be achieved when innovation, renewable energy and sustainable transport work together. In partnership with EcoGozo and the Public Works Department, we are proud to see Gozo setting a European precedent for clean technology and renewable energy integration.
This is not just a project, it is a promise. A promise that Gozo and Malta will continue to innovate, invest and inspire towards a cleaner, more sustainable future for generations to come.
