The Times editorial discussing the European parliament elections in June (March 16) incredibly gave the impression that these elections will only be contested by the PN and the MLP. Surely The Times is aware that Alternattiva Demokratika, Malta's green party, will be contesting and will be presenting one of the most qualified persons for the job? Arnold Cassola has all the qualities to make Malta proud in this role.
It is also of crucial importance to be represented not just in the two large European political groupings, the European Popular Party (PN) and the European Socialists (MLP), but also in other important groupings such as the Greens (AD).
Malta in the European parliament needs to be in touch with as many points of view as is possible and The Times ought not to neglect this if it really holds the good of the country at heart. The Maltese electorate should be informed of the fact that the vote of the Greens has often been decisive in the European parliament. Therefore, having a Maltese representative of the calibre of Prof. Cassola in that political grouping can only be in the best interests of our country.
For these reasons, I will certainly vote for Prof. Cassola in the European elections and I am sure that thousands of others would if they were wisely informed. Please let us not allow the mammoth parties to turn this, our country's birth into the European political fold, into yet another of those obnoxious parochial contests of which the Maltese are so fed up.
