The European Parliament finally passed a new piece of legislation which will put an end to extra costs for using mobile phones in another EU country by June 15, 2017.

The Single Market Telecommunications Regulation includes as a fundamental measure the end of roaming charges for voice, SMS and data as of June 15, 2017.

On April 30, 2016, a transitional period will begin during which roaming charges will be greatly reduced in many cases to a quarter of the price users pay today.

During this transition period, the maximum fee that operators may apply will be 5c per minute for calls (compared to the current 19c), 2c per SMS (compared to the current 6) and 5c per megabyte data (compared to the current 20).

The new telecoms regulation will also guarantee an open and non-discriminatory internet based on the principle of net neutrality.
