Lino Farrugia, writing in his capacity as the secretary of the hunters' and trappers' federation, invokes tradition as a reason for hunting in Malta (March 1). Traditions can only be justified if they still make sense and fit in with changing times.

Using Mr Farrugia's reasoning, Maltese hunters should be using traditional single shot muskets to shoot only birds they can eat and anyone who breaks the law gets sentenced in the traditional way to the galleys for a few years!

Is Mr Farrugia's understanding of the word tradition as distorted as his federation's misuse of the word "conservation"? Or does Mr Farrugia think that traditions, like hunting practices and law enforcement, need to be brought up to date with the 21st century ?
