How Malta has positioned itself as a European leader in digital transformation
On a recent visit to his home city of Cork, Ireland, Exante director Patrick O'Brien met with its first citizen Lord Mayor Fergal Dennehy, for a signing at City Hall. Dennehy congratulated O'Brien and acknowledged the important role that he and the wider Irish diaspora play in supporting Ireland's national development while projecting its influence globally.
With a high concentration of multinational giants like Google, Meta, Apple and Microsoft, has seen exponential business growth over the last four years. O'Brien met with numerous business leaders and university tech students to discuss the advancing technological changes that are reshaping Ireland’s economy.

In his discussions with various business sectors, O'Brien discussed how Malta has positioned itself as a European leader in digital transformation, characterised by its pioneering adoption of a national AI strategy in 2019 and a subsequent realignment in 2025 to prioritise societal well-being and sustainability. Malta now ranks 33rd in the Government AI Readiness Index and is a top performer in the digitalisation of public services within the EU.
“Malta has cultivated a thriving technology ecosystem also, particularly in iGaming, fintech and blockchain. The sector with support of government agencies like Tech.mt and the Malta Information Technology Agency (MITA) has seen massive growth,” said O'Brien. “As a company, Exante are delighted to be a part of its success, now celebrating 15 years in business while embracing all tech changes,” he added.
