The work of artist Gemma Hartmann will be exhibited at the Italian Cultural Institute, in Valletta from Monday as part of the activities to celebrate Malta's accession to the European Union.

The Copenhagen-born artist, who is considered as an "artistic child" of Italy, excels in city scenes, cityscapes and city life, is an urban artist. The monuments, palaces, churches and squares of Rome, the city that nurtured her as an artist, feature strongly in her portfolio.

Her art studies led her to a diploma from the Accademia delle Belle Arti in Rome, where Marcello Avenali, Amerigo Bartoli Natinguerra and Luigi Surdi tutored her. She studied engraving under Mino Maccari, sculpture under Alessandro Monteleone, and design at the Accademia di Francia, Villa Medici.

By applying different painting techniques, Ms Hartmann gave her works a dynamic expression.

Her oil paintings, on the other hand, portray surrealist scenes. She seals her works in a particular way - a threadlike signature that is held by an animal, such as a bird, a frog or a cat, a sign of her love for animals.

Ms Hartmann's works will be exhibited under the patronage of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta and will be inaugurated on Monday at 7 p.m. by Italian ambassador Alvise Memmo.

The exhibition will be open till May 21.
