Exhibition of creativity on show at Banca Giuratale in Victoria
‘I don’t define my paintings. They define me,’ artist says
A collection of paintings themed ‘Creativity’ is currently on display at the Banca Giuratale in Victoria.
Commenting on her works, artist Marita Buttigieg said painting has played a significant role in her life since 2007. She first began her artistic journey at the Gozo Visual and Performing Arts School in Xewkija, where she discovered a passion that has only grown stronger over the years.
Alongside painting, photography has also become central to her creative process, offering her moments of instant beauty that often inspire her later works. “I don’t define my paintings. They define me,” the artist said.
She is deeply captivated by beauty, especially the natural splendour of Gozo. Her paintings are a visual celebration of her ongoing quest to capture this beauty – found in the simplest cloud, meadow, sky or sea. Colour is a powerful force in her art, guiding her brush into expressive territories she never imagined when she first began. Light too plays a leading role; almost unconsciously, she is always experimenting with it, bringing her paintings to life through its dynamic presence.
Buttigieg is grateful to her teachers at the school, each of whom helped refine her technique. She is currently under the expert tuition of artist Denis Mampalao.
The exhibition remains open until Sunday. Visiting hours are Monday to Friday between 7.30am and 2.30pm, and Saturday and Sunday from 9am to noon.
