A development permit application has been made to the Environment and Planning Authority for the development of an artificial reef off Exiles in Sliema using recycled material, Home Affairs Minister Tonio Borg said.

He said the purpose of the reef was to create an artificial habitat. The project will be carried out with the cooperation of the Marine Ecology Research Group of the university. It will be financed through the Lm50,000 which the authority seized from the Portomaso developers following the violation of development permits.

The minister was replying to a parliamentary question by Labour MP Charles Buhagiar, who observed that the application was submitted by the authority's own director.
