Experts this morning presented a number of reports in the case against Darren Debono, the man who was allegedly injured in the attempted HSBC heist and was injured again during a hold-up on a jeweller in Attard.

Mr Debono was shot in one of his legs during the attempt on the jeweller, Michael Mizzi, on December 3.

He had admitted his involvement and that he had hit Mr Mizzi on the head with a wheel brace, slightly injuring him, threatening him and holding him against his will.

However, he had pleaded not guilty to stealing a car and stealing a number plate, making use of forged documents, making false declarations, illegal association to commit a crime and violating the conditions of a previous sentence.

He has also been charged with breaching bail conditions.

Ballistic experts Jesmond Cassar and Christopher Harmsworth and scene of the crime officer Theo Vella presented their reports to Magistrate Doreen Clarke.

PC Patrick Farrugia presented a number of items retrieved from the scene of the crime including a wheel brace.

Physician Mario Scerri, who had examined Darren Debono following his operation, told the court he had found Mr Debono to be suffering from compartment syndrome in both legs.

He said that Michael Mizzi’s son Silvio, had not been suffering from anything while Michael had a laceration on his head coming from blunt trauma and an abrasion on his face, that was also bruised.

Since defence lawyer Michael Sciriha did not appear in court due to illness, the victims would be testifying when the case continues.
