'Exploding' skip injures man

A man was seriously injured in a bizarre incident in Qormi yesterday which involved an 'exploding' skip.

The police said the 35-year-old from Sliema was about to dispose of some items in the skip when "for some reason it exploded" and threw the man to the ground.

However, there was no explosive material, such as unexploded fireworks, involved, and no foul play is suspected, the police said. They said one possibility was that something inside the skip, which is in Mdina Road, had been caused to expand rapidly by the heat.

The man was taken to hospital with grevious, though not critical, injuries.

Qormi police are investigating.
