A magistrate yesterday heard how a man informed the police that a false declaration had been made for insurance purposes after his former girlfriend was involved in a traffic collision, which her father took the blame for.

Magistrate Anthony Vella was presiding over the compilation of evidence against Carmelo Cutajar, 47, of Zurrieq and Marco Magro, 38, of Mqabba who are pleading not guilty to making a false declaration on November 22, 2003.

He heard how, after Mr Cutajar's daughter, Ruth, broke up with her boyfriend Joseph Magri, the latter went to the insurance company, and later to the police, and told them that a false declaration had been made.

Mr Magri told the police that it was Ms Cutajar who was at the wheel when she collided with Mr Magro's car but a false declaration was made, stating that Mr Cutajar was driving at the time.

Dr Joseph Giglio appeared for Mr Cutajar.

Dr Michael Tanti Dougal appeared for Mr Magro.
