A Guinean migrant who lives in an open centre in Trapani, Sicily, was yesterday sentenced to seven months in prison after admitting to having travelled to Malta on holiday with false documentation.

Zaac Bensoli, 21, told the police he did not come to Malta to look for a job – as many did – but to have a holiday. He said he was a student.

Magistrate Doreen Clarke was informed that Mr Bensoli arrived a month ago using fake documents. While checking in to return to Trapani, airport officials realised that his documents were counterfeit and he was arrested.

His documents had not been checked upon entry because he had flown in from a country within the Schengen zone.

Legal aid lawyer Joe Ellis gave notice of appeal.

Police Inspector Darren Buhagiar prosecuted.
