Why can't Maghtab continue to be used as a landfill while the engineered landfill site is being excavated next door? "Unless this site is completely shut for co-disposal of waste there will be little sense to intervene and implement rehabilitation measures. Besides, we all acknowledge that the capacity of Maghtab has become restricted and the sooner we divert waste from this site the better."

Why Mnajdra? "There are 16 quarries that lie outside the water protection zone. Out of these, six are disused. The quarries at Mnajdra are the only ones that allow for a two and a half year operation. The remaining disused ones are of a smaller capacity."

Could there be a danger of damage from explosion due to methane gases emitting from the dump which might pose a risk to the temples? "The scientific analysis on Maghtab limits the risk of explosion to a minimum and this for an uncontrolled facility. It would be difficult to imagine something of the sort occurring for a controlled engineered facility."
