What are Malta's politicians wearing? A local fashion page has the answer

Who Wore What in Malta tracks politicians' attire, from brand details to price tags

What started as a study-break hobby has grown into a social media page analysing the clothes worn by Malta’s politicians and their spouses.

Set up in 2022, Who Wore What in Malta identifies outfits worn by public figures, including the designer, brand and price where possible. The page has built a following of 6,800 people on Facebook and more than 1,500 on Instagram.

“I have always loved fashion and been fascinated by what celebrities would wear,” the anonymous creator of the page told Times of Malta. While studying for a Phd in engineering, she wanted a creative distraction from academic work. Seeing that no local page analysed politicians’ fashion, she decided to launch Who Wore What in Malta.

“I wanted to spend my study breaks cutting away from the scientific topic and focusing on another subject I love: fashion,” she said.

One of the page’s first posts featured Prime Minister Robert Abela and his wife, Lydia, during an official meeting with then-US president Joe Biden and his wife, Jill. The post focused on Lydia Abela’s Penelope dress from designer ERDEM, which was listed as costing €2,515 at the time.

The creator said some followers have questioned why she includes the prices of outfits. “It’s about transparency and why shouldn’t people know how much an outfit costs,” she exclaimed. “Other fashion analyst pages abroad do the same thing when analysing outfits of other politicians.”

Best looks

The page gained wider attention last December after posting a carousel of images featuring the “best looks” from the 2025 Republic Day parade.

The creator said she can often identify an outfit, a handbag or a pair of shoes by sight. When she cannot identify an item, she sometimes uses artificial intelligence tools to help find the designer, although she says she treats the results carefully. “There are times when AI might give me the wrong brand and that is when I need to be even more careful with the small details,” she said.

One recent example involved outfits worn by politicians and their spouses during the opening of parliament. She said she recognised a dress worn by Ian Borg’s wife, Rachel Borg Dingli, as being by Self-Portrait, although AI tools suggested other brands. “I knew it was that brand because of the golden buttons and their shape,” she said. “Some people might overlook these details but these are the things I keep an eye out for.”

In recent weeks, Who Wore What in Malta also analysed outfits linked to the 2026 May election, with a particular focus on the spouses of the party leaders. The creator said she looks not only at what they wore but also the colours they choose and what those colours may suggest.

Statement

“For example, many times the UK royal family is seen wearing blue, which is a symbol of power. So, it crossed my mind to see what colours Lydia and Sarah [Bajada, partner of Alex Borg] were wearing and what I thought they were trying to convey with those colours.”

A recent post about Nationalist MP Eve Borg Bonello’s outfit for the swearing-in of the new member of parliament also attracted attention. The young MP chose a white skirt suit with a tie, designed by local designer Jean Claude Farrugia.

“I saw online how her outfit gained a lot of attention and some negative comments and I wanted to give a run-down of the history of the fashion trend,” she said. She said fashion was not only about looking good but also about making a statement, which she believes is what the young MP did.

Asked how she chooses which outfits to post, she said it usually depends on which looks she likes most or which ones are the boldest.

No MPS or politicians have contacted her directly so far, although she said one or two follow the page.

As for her favourite dressed politicians, she said Lydia Abela is “always best dressed” at formal events, Bajada “has a certain presence that captures a room” and Roberta Metsola has the best shoe collection. “She has a wonderful collection of Roger Vivier shoes and has a quiet luxury look,” she said.
