A man and his son were yesterday handed down a two-year jail sentence suspended for two years when they admitted to threatening, assaulting and seriously injuring their neighbour on Monday.

On handing down judgement Magistrate Joseph Cassar condemned the men's "serious actions" as "there are enough problems in the world".

The magistrate told the 62-year-old man and his 28-year-old son that he had given them a suspended jail term as a chance, so they would never repeat the silly behaviour against a neighbour again.

The two men, whose names and area of residence cannot be published by court order, pleaded guilty to threatening, assaulting and injuring their neighbour, uttering obscene words in public and breaching the peace.

The father also admitted to causing over Lm500 damage to the neighbour's car.

The magistrate bound the two men not to approach the neighbour for a year against a Lm100 fine in default.

Police inspectors Ramon Mercieca and Victor Aquilina prosecuted.

Lawyers Joe Bonnici and Edward Saliba appeared for the two men.
