Father and son charged with drug trafficking

Men were fishing when police carried out raid

A father and son were arraigned in court on Sunday charged with trafficking various drugs.

Ryan Brincat, 42, and Tryston Brincat, 19, from Bormla were charged with trafficking cocaine, heroin and cannabis. The younger Brincat was also charged with breaching two sets of bail conditions.

Testifying before the court, police inspector Francesco Mizzi said that on Saturday, police carried out a raid while the two men, and a third man who was subsequently released, were fishing.

Upon hearing that he was being arrested, the younger Brincat jumped into the sea.

A search was conducted but it yielded no illicit drugs. However, upon inspecting seized mobile phones, police found messages indicating drug trafficking.

Police then spoke to the people behind the messages, who confirmed drug trafficking and will be testifying at the next sitting.

Police investigations are ongoing.

Magistrate Monica Vella rejected a request for bail due to the serious nature of the offences, previous convictions and the fear of tampering with evidence.

Lawyer Franco Debono appeared on behalf of the accused, while Valentina Cassar from the Attorney General’s office prosecuted.
