Flyers and Fleur de Lys had met twice in the women's league this season with the former winning both encounters 3-2. The third meeting between these two sides last weekend developed into another tight affair. Flyers were without Mandy Minuti and Louise Camilleri and FDL had sisters Sandra and Daniela Bonnici and Charlene Barbara out.
Inspired by Amanda Agius's performance, Flyers won the opening two sets, 25-22 and 27-25. But Fleur de Lys fought back to take the next two sets and force a tiebreak.
Flyers lost setter Lindsay Cordina through injury and FDL duly capitalised. Sara El Gasi drove her services effectively through the Flyers defence as Belinda Milton helped FDL race to a four-point lead but back came Flyers to tie the score at 12-12.
Adriana Calleja then helped Fleur de Lys claim the remaining three crucial points and victory.
In the men's league, FDL Westen obtained a 3-1 win over SouthEnd.
Fleur de Lys won the first set but Patrick Felice Pace and Malcolm St John raised their game as Southend hit back in the second set.
However, FDL regained touch with good attacks by Paul Tonna and Jonathan Chetcuti, and won the remaining two sets.
The championships are in their final stages. In the women's league, Paola Hibs Candy are well on course to win their sixth successive title as they are four points clear of FDL.
In the men's league, Westen have a five-point lead over Valletta Mapei.
