The Federation of English Language Teaching Organisations (Feltom) has a programme of initiatives lined up for this year to mark its 20th anniversary.

Among the first is a specialised course for EFL teachers of young learners aged seven to 12 from January 26 to 30 at NSTS. The course aims to help teachers meet the challenges of keeping young students' interest and keeping them focused and motivated. The course, led by Alan Marsh, will consist of 20 hours of practical, interactive seminars and workshops.

Later this year, Feltom is holding a Train the Trainer course led by Tim Bowen and a workshop led by Scott Thornbury, both well-known TEFL authors.

Besides these specialised courses, teachers of EFL that would like to go beyond the 60-hour TEFL training course mandated by law, usually opt for an internationally-recognised certificate course which will help them to gain employment on a year-round basis, maximise their earning potential and advance in their TEFL career.

The two best-known and most widely-recognised EFL teaching courses are the Cambridge ESOL Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults (Celta) and the Trinity College Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (CTESOL). These courses, both offered in Malta, include course work and teaching practices and can be done on a part- or full-time basis.

For those who aspire to a director of studies post, a diploma course in TEFL such as the Cambridge ESOL Delta and DTESOL would be the next step.

Again, courses leading to these qualifications are offered in Malta and can be completed in six to nine months.

The Delta is even being offered online now.

For more information on the course for teachers of young learners one may contact Isabelle Pace Warrington at executive@feltom.com or on 2744 5422 by tomorrow.
