Festivals Malta unveils 2026 events calendar, five-year cultural strategy

The launch outlined 11 major festivals, five national holiday commemorations and a range of additional cultural initiatives

Festivals Malta, together with the Minister for Culture, Lands and Local Government Owen Bonnici, has announced an expanded national cultural programme for 2026 along with a new strategic plan to guide the agency’s development through 2031.

The launch outlined 11 major festivals, five national holiday commemorations and a range of additional cultural initiatives intended to broaden public participation and strengthen Malta’s creative sector.

The 2026 cultural calendar will open in January with the Valletta Baroque Festival and conclude in November with the Three Palaces Festival. Among the additions to the programme is a new event, the Valletta Guitar Festival, which will join the line-up as a dedicated celebration of guitar performance and repertoire.

Another significant update is the transformation of the Ritmu Roots Festival into a renewed concept under the name Festgħana, intended to further develop its identity and appeal.

Presenting the programme, Bonnici emphasised the government’s commitment to sustaining cultural growth through structured planning and investment.

He described the 2026 programme as “ambitious and visionary”, noting that the inclusion of 11 festivals and five national holiday commemorations reflects Malta’s increasing capacity to support year-round cultural activity. According to Bonnici, the continued expansion of the cultural sector is evidence of a solid and professional infrastructure that enables artists, organisations and audiences to engage with culture at a national level.

The minister also highlighted the new five-year plan, Festivals & Beyond 2026-2031, which outlines the agency’s goals for collaboration, accessibility and artistic development. The strategy calls for deeper partnerships between public and private entities, an enhanced focus on inclusivity for audiences, and sustained support for Malta’s artistic community.

Bonnici characterised the document as a guideline for building a durable cultural foundation for the future: a framework designed to support long-term planning, resource management and innovation.

Festivals Malta chairperson Aaron Zahra provided further insight into the strategic plan, describing it as the outcome of extensive consultation with artists, audiences, local stakeholders and international experts.

The process, he said, was aimed at ensuring that the agency’s festivals serve not only as cultural showcases but also as contributors to community well-being and individual creativity.

Zahra stated that the plan reaffirms the agency’s core objective: cultivating a diverse portfolio of festivals that represent Malta’s cultural and creative identity. By strengthening this portfolio, Festivals Malta aims to expand its impact at both local and international levels.

Festivals Malta CEO Frans Agius addressed the agency’s operational direction for the coming year, noting that the organisation enters 2026 with a broader and more varied set of events. Agius explained that the agency’s growth is ongoing and built on a commitment to accessibility, artistic development and cultural preservation.

He said that the 2026 programme reflects an effort to provide diverse experiences for audiences, while offering local artists increased opportunities to develop and present their work. Agius added that the agency will continue prioritising initiatives that safeguard Malta’s cultural heritage, ensuring that traditional and contemporary expressions are both represented.

Another key initiative presented during the launch was the development of Festivals Malta’s new website, festivals.mt. The platform will serve as a comprehensive digital hub with an emphasis on usability and accessibility.

Features will include a screen reader, virtual keyboard, bilingual content in Maltese and English, and an improved navigation structure designed to simplify access to event information. The website is intended to support both local audiences and international visitors seeking details about Malta’s cultural events.

With the release of its 2026 calendar and long-term strategy, Festivals Malta aims to reinforce its role as a central driver of cultural activity in the country. The combined programme and strategy outline a vision focused on sustainable growth, broader engagement and enhanced artistic quality.

More information on Festivals Malta’s initiatives and events is available through the agency’s official website, festivals.mt.
