Field and former defence post transferred to Birżebbuġa band club
The band club will hold them on a 15-year lease
A field and a former defence post held by the Lands Authority have been transferred to a Birżebbuġa band club on a 15-year lease.
The Lands Ministry said the 350-square-metre field and structure in Triq il-Brolli, Birżebbuġa, were transferred to the St Peter Banda Philharmonic Society, to provide more facilities for fireworks used in the annual festa.
The acquisition of the field will mean improved space for pyrotechnicians, increasing safety, the ministry said.
Meanwhile, the former defence post will be restored and maintained by the society, which will not be allowed to store pyrotechnic material in it.
Lands Minister Owen Bonnici said the transfer represented a “clear commitment of the Government to continue to strengthen and support societies in carrying out their work in favour of Maltese culture”.
The allocation of the field and structure was “concrete proof” of that commitment, he said.
Lands Authority CEO Robert Vella said the agreement reflected the authority’s commitment to using public land for the benefit of the community.
Band club president Alex Caruana said the transfer would mean technicians had “adequate space” to light fireworks.
The transfer was signed by Vella, Caruana and cashier Walter Pace.
