The Finnish Ambassador to Malta, Alec Mikael Aalto, whose office is in Milan, Italy, paid a courtesy visit on FOI president Anton Borg last Tuesday. Mr Borg and FOI executive Cecilia Vella welcomed the Ambassador who was accompanied by the director and honorary consul- general for Finland, Edgar E. Arrigo.
Following Mr Borg's introduction to the federation and its role within the economy, the advantages of setting up in Malta were discussed, including the flexibility of the Maltese labour force (in view of multiskilling and short-run production lines), the cultural similarities to Mediterranean and African markets while having an English speaking workforce.
FOI officials also highlighted industry's concerns on government-induced costs, particularly the charges arising due to the introduction of new regulatory authorities, as well as the situation at the ports and rising labour costs.
EU membership was also discussed. Mr Borg referred to the bilateral agreements the EU has with third countries, as well as Malta's future adoption of the euro in view of the anticipated trade flexibility it would facilitate within the EU and the disciplinary measures that such a system would have on public financial management.
