Members of the Civil Protection Department were called to the Mellieha Holiday Complex last night to extinguish a fire which broke out in its electricity sub-station.
A police statement said that at about 8.15 p.m. they were informed that an explosion had taken place at the complex, where they found the sub-station on fire.
Some residents had reported the explosion to the managing director, Lemming Jensen, who immediately informed the fire brigade.
Members of staff of the complex in the meantime used fire extinguishers to put out the fire. The sub-station is in the centre of the complex, and all bungalows were evacuated. A group of residents had just arrived from the airport.
For a time the centre was without electricity, until a standby generator could be used. No-one was injured and no damage was caused to the bungalows. Enemalta personnel went on the spot to remove any danger from the sub-station.
A magisterial inquiry was held.
