A scrapyard fire in a Bir id-Deheb scrapyard, near Għaxaq, on Sunday afternoon produced a thick column of smoke seen over a wide area of Malta.

The fire broke out at about 1.20pm. The Civil Protection Department deployed several fire-fighting teams and the fire was quickly extinguished.

In a statement later, the Civil Protection Department said the fire needed   95,000 Litres of water and 500 Litres of foam to be extinguished. It said 10 Fire Appliances and 22 officers responded to this incident.
