Fire at St Julian’s restaurant causes traffic chaos
Blaze believed to have started in extraction system, no injuries reported
Traffic around St Julian’s ground to a halt on Thursday afternoon after a fire broke out at a restaurant on St George’s Road.
A spokesperson for the Civil Protection Department told Times of Malta the fire at Veranda Grill and Wine restaurant was now under control but firefighters remain on the scene “as a precaution”.
He said the fire is believed to have been caused by ducting in the extraction system.
No injuries were reported.
Three fire engines and 10 firefighters were on site to control the fire. They were supported by a medical team from Mater Dei Hospital, Transport Malta and the police.
The road was closed to traffic from both directions causing significant tailbacks during rush hour.
Drivers took to social media to warn others to avoid the area due to “very heavy traffic”.
